Plus500 Brumbies lock Darcy Swain has signed a new deal with the Super Rugby club that will extend his current contract for a further three years, committing him to the Canberra side until the end of 2022.
Swain, who made his Brumbies debut against the Argentinean side the Jaguares in Canberra in 2018, is one of a clutch of young talent that will provide the mainstay of the Brumbies for years to come, with the Queensland-born second-rower happy to have secured his future in the ACT.
“I am delighted to be able to extend my contract with the Brumbies for a further three years,” Swain said.
“The Brumbies were the team that gave me my chance in Super Rugby and I am thoroughly enjoying every minute of my time at the club.
“We have some top-quality locks at the Brumbies, off whom I can learn so much, and I feel that my game is progressing nicely, even though I still have a lot to learn at this level.
“I am extremely happy that Dan and the Brumbies staff have shown their faith in me, and I look forward to playing in front of the loyal, and passionate, Brumbies faithful. I’m glad I can now call Canberra home.”
Swain joined the Brumbies Academy in 2016 and, after enjoying a successful season with the Brumbies U20 squad in 2017 and excelling in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup, was promoted to the senior Brumbies squad at the beginning of the current campaign.
Last season, Swain helped the Tuggeranong Vikings to claim the Griffin Legal John I Dent Premiership, playing an integral part with a series of hard-working performances.
“We are delighted that Darcy has extended his contract with the Brumbies for another three years and I look forward to working with him,” Plus500 Brumbies Head Coach Dan McKellar commented.
“I’ve often said that we need to produce our own talent for the Brumbies in Super Rugby and Darcy is a perfect example of that being a product of our Academy structure.
“He is a good example of the Academy and Pathway system working and has a bright future ahead of him at Super Rugby level.
Darcy is a quality young Lock who has excellent set-piece skills and is very physical. Both qualities that we like to see in our Locks.”
The young lock has already seen some game time in the 2019 Super Rugby competition having been a replacement for the match against the Hurricanes in Palmerston North.
The Plus500 Brumbies are next in action on Saturday 6 April when they meet the Crusaders in Christchurch, before returning home for a fixture with the Lions from South Africa at GIO Stadium on Saturday 13 April. Tickets for this match are available from www.ticketek.com.au.
