Women’s rugby in the ACT continues to flourish with Michelle Milward and Louise Burrows both being recognised with selection in the Australian Wallaroos side.
The two stars of ACT women’s rugby have been in top form, with Milward earning her first call up and Burrows returning to the Wallaroos after leaving the national side to start a family several years ago.
Milward has come from Queanbeyan to make the national side while Burrows claims the honours from her club side, Royals.
“I am extremely proud and a little shocked to be selected to play for Australia,” Millward said.
“After I broke my collar bone after our first camp I thought that might be it for me, but our coaches have shown a lot of faith in selecting me. I couldn’t be happier. To be selected for my country is something that’s been a goal of mine for a number of years.
“When I get that chance to pull on that jersey and run out for Australia it will be a moment I’ll never forget and will have made all those early mornings and countless hrs of training all worthwhile.”
Mother of two, Burrows said she was thrilled to be named in the squad.
“I’m very excited and honoured to be selected in the Wallaroos team to tour to New Zealand for the tri-series against New Zealand and Canada,” Burrows said.
“I’ve been working hard and know that in the lead up to this tour the volume and intensity will increase again. I have to start each day at 5.30am in order to fit all my training in as it gets very busy being a mum and working as a PE teacher at Canberra Girls Grammar School.“
To have the opportunity to represent my country again since having my children is something I am very proud of. To be able to play a test match for Australia in front of my husband Mick and two children Fletcher 6 and Georgie 4 will be an amazing feeling.”
The Australian side will compete in a Tri-Nations tournament between Canada and New Zealand during, before moving on to the World Cup in France in August.
Players were initially selected in a 40-player Wallaroos Squad following the Women’s 15s National Championship at Riverview in Sydney in September 2013 where the ACT team finished equal third with WA.
