The Brumbies are pleased to announce backrow Rebecca Smyth will captain the club’s Super W side in 2022, having claimed the prestigious Helen Taylor award in 2021.

Smyth has been a mainstay for the Brumbies since joining the club in 2020, having previously represented the Wallaroos a three Rugby World Cups.

The Narromine local routinely makes the long journey to Canberra for training, showcasing her incredible commitment to the Brumbies, and becomes the club’s fourth captain after Shellie Milward, Jane Garraway and Michaela Leonard.

Brumbies captain, Rebecca Smyth said: “I’m honoured to be leading this group this season.”

“I’ve loved every minute of playing for the Brumbies and I believe this group can achieve special things if we do the work required.

“Being captain means I’ll run out first and speak to the referee, but we have a really strong leadership group as well and we’re all committed to driving the standards we have set for ourselves as a team.”

Brumbies head coach, Dan Hawke said: “(Smyth) is a joy to work with, someone who lives and breathes the values we expect from a Brumby.”

“She’s done everything in the game, has life experience and a presence that people just feed off.

“Through adversity last year, Dunny emerged as a strong voice within the team and with a new group this year, we felt she was the perfect person to take on the captaincy for what we hope will be a special season.”
