Canberra local Ryan Lonergan has re-signed with the Plus500 Brumbies until the end of the 2022 season, committing his future to his boyhood club.

The 22-year-old rose through the Brumbies pathways system to join the Super Rugby squad in 2017, making his debut as a teenager against the Chiefs in Waikato.

Since then, the halfback has steadily honed his craft, playing the most minutes of his young career in 2020, starting twice in the number nine jersey.

Lonergan, who is also an exceptional goal-kicker, has excelled at every level on his journey to Super Rugby.

In 2018, Lonergan captained the Junior Wallabies at the U20 World Cup, playing alongside fellow Brumbies Mack Hansen, Tom Ross, Len Ikitau and Bayley Kuenzle.

In his two starts for the side this year, Lonergan has shown his improvement, scoring a try in both outings and showcasing his outstanding ability off the tee.

Plus500 Brumbies scrumhalf Ryan Lonergan said: “It’s awesome to re-sign with the Brumbies for the next two seasons."

“Canberra and the Brumbies are home for me and to know I’ll be coming to work every day at the club I grew up supporting is a great feeling.

“Playing for this club, with my brother (Lachlan) is really special for me and my family and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

“I’m looking forward to working with the coaching staff and the other quality halfbacks we have at the club and improving my game.”

Plus500 Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said: “We’re delighted Ryan will be staying with the Brumbies for at least the next two years.”

“Ryan’s a local lad who has come through our pathway system and has ticked every box on his way up through the ranks.

“He’s been part of our group for a couple years after joining us straight out of school and for a young player his progression is clear to see.

“This season he has matured as person and a player and he’s looked really comfortable at Super Rugby level."
