ACT local and Brumbies Sevens player Brodie Leber has been named in the Australian Sevens side for the Hottest7s this weekend in Darwin on 21-22 January.

Both the Mens and Womens teams have named strong squads for the weekend long tournament.Qantas Australian Women’s coach Tim Walsh has named a strong line-up, including Evania Pelite from the successful Olympic Gold Medal campaign.

The tournament will act as an ideal preparation for the Sydney7s, now less than three weeks away.“It’s a great opportunity for the girls to go out and impress as there’s a couple of positions up for grabs at the Sydney7s,” Women’s Head Coach Tim Walsh said.

“The Darwin Sevens competition is one of the toughest non-World Series events of the year and it’s a perfect lead-in for Sydney and the rest of the series.

“We have four development players in this squad just because we know we can’t sit back and rest on our laurels if we want to keep growing as a side,” Walsh said.

Qantas Australian Men’s coach Andy Friend continues to rejuvenate his young side with two development players included in the 12-man squad, alongside Fijian project player Andrew Tamanitoakula.

The men are set to play in three tournaments over three consecutive weekends with World Series events in Wellington and Sydney to immediately follow Darwin.

“The lads have a real carrot waiting for them if they perform well at the Darwin Sevens, with the Wellington and Sydney events just around the corner,” said Men’s Head Coach Andy Friend.

“We have a few spots that we’re yet to lock in for those events so this will be a great chance for the boys to really stake their claim.”The Hottest7s will feature 12 women’s teams and 32 men’s sides from all across Australia as well as Fiji, Singapore and Borneo.Darwin’s Hottest7s event continues to grow year-on-year with a total prize pool of $80,000, making it the richest tournament in the southern hemisphere.
