Big hits, relentless effort and explosive carries define Rayna Ellis every time she takes the field.

Born in Hobart and proudly representing her Samoan and Māori heritage, Ellis first picked up rugby at 15 after a background in netball. Since then, she has developed into a dynamic backrower renowned for her bone-rattling tackles, powerful ball carries and ability to change momentum through sheer physicality. Whether she's stopping attackers in their tracks or charging through defenders herself, Rayna brings intensity to every contest.

Her rugby journey is far from conventional. Alongside her role as an Electronic Technician in the Royal Australian Navy, Ellis forged her reputation through both civilian and military rugby pathways. Her performances earned selection in the Australian Defence Force Women's Rugby Union team, where she made her international debut at the International Defence Rugby Competition and showcased the discipline, toughness and work ethic that have become trademarks of her game.

Those standout performances caught the attention of Brumbies coaches, leading to her inclusion in the ACT Brumbies program ahead of the 2026 season. She wasted little time making an impression, representing the franchise in the Next Gen 7s series and proving herself a valuable addition through her athleticism, versatility and uncompromising defensive presence.

Away from rugby, Rayna enjoys shopping, spending time with family and friends, and appreciates the simple things; a sleep-in, an iced matcha and a home-cooked meal. Inspired by Wallaroo and former Brumbie, Lydia Kavoa, she admires players who combine power with authenticity and leadership. One adventure still sitting high on her bucket list is travelling through South America.

Heading into the 2026 season, Ellis shapes as an exciting addition to the Brumbies squad; a powerful dual-career athlete whose toughness, work rate and physicality make her a natural fit for the back row.
