Electric in space and fearless in the air — Kye Oates turns opportunities into highlights.

Hailing from Toowoomba in Central Queensland and born in Biloela, Oates first picked up rugby at Toowoomba Grammar School and hasn’t looked back since. A quick-footed outside back with natural instincts, he’s built a game around speed, timing and the ability to win contests above the ground.

A proud Indigenous leader, Oates captained the National Indigenous side in 2016 and went on to represent the Australian Barbarians at the inaugural U19 Rugby Championship in 2018. His rise continued with selection in the Junior Wallabies squad for the 2019 World Rugby U20s Championship, showcasing his talent on the international stage.

Equally comfortable in fifteens and sevens, Oates brought his game to the global circuit, debuting for the Australian Men’s Sevens team at the 2022 Hong Kong Sevens. He continued to represent across international tournaments, including appearances in Samoa and Fiji in 2024 as part of the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team.

In 2025, he added further strings to his bow, representing the First Nations & Pasifika XV and joining the Brumbies. Whether it’s climbing above defenders or slicing through broken play, Oates brings genuine X-factor to the backfield.

Off the field, he works as an Indigenous Student Support Officer and enjoys surfing and golf, a balance that reflects both his grounded nature and love of the outdoors.

Heading into the 2026 season, Oates shapes as a dynamic aerial threat and attacking spark — explosive, instinctive and ready to light up the game in Brumbies colours.
