Reliable everywhere, dangerous anywhere; Ella Ryan can cover just about every role in the backline and make it look natural.
A Canberra Royals product through and through, Ryan first pulled on the boots at 12 after spending more than a decade in competitive dance and calisthenics. Beginning the sport as a No.15 before transitioning through flyhalf, inside centre, halfback, and back to flyhalf, her journey across the spine of the field highlights her exceptional versatility and rugby IQ.
Whether she’s controlling tempo at No.9, directing play at No.10, punching into the line at 12 or organising the backfield at 15, Ryan’s all-round skillset allows her to impact the game in multiple ways. Her composure, ball-playing ability and kicking game make her one of the Brumbies’ most adaptable backs.
Ryan made her Brumbies debut at just 17 years old in February 2020 against the Western Force at GIO Stadium, earning cap #48. In 2026, she reached another milestone when she debuted for the Wallaroos earlier this year against the USA in Kansas City, becoming Wallaroo #234.
Away from rugby, Ryan works as a fitness instructor and personal trainer, with training and the gym naturally becoming a huge part of her lifestyle. Inspired by Simone Biles and her advocacy for athlete mental health, Ryan values resilience, honesty and balance just as much as performance.
Her ideal rest day is all about slowing down; sunrise beach walks, ocean swims, time with family and dogs, a well-earned nap and finishing the day with a sauna, dinner and movie night.
Heading into the 2026 season, Ryan continues to shape as one of the Brumbies’ most valuable utility backs; skilful, composed and capable of stepping into any role the game demands.
