Small in stature, massive in influence - Dan Nelson runs the game from the shadows.

Born and bred in Willoughby, Sydney, Nelson has had a ball in hand since he was five years old, starting out at Chatswood Junior Rugby Club with his dad as coach. From those early mornings on suburban fields, his feel for tempo, timing and territory was obvious. Chatswood Rugby Club was home, but his ambitions stretched further.

A student of the game, Nelson grew up watching George Gregan and Faf de Klerk - two halfbacks known for their competitiveness and control - and you can see those influences in his style. At 179cm and 85kg, he brings zip around the ruck, sharp service, and a willingness to back himself when the gap appears. He doesn’t just move the ball - he moves the game.

Educated at St Thomas Primary School and St Ignatius’ College, Riverview, Nelson now also balances his rugby with a Bachelor of Business Management, applying the same discipline off the field as he does on it. His work ethic has been shaped beyond rugby too - landscaping, concierge shifts at Manly Pacific Hotel, and working as a Learning Support Assistant at Arawang Primary School.

Away from the whistle, you’ll find him playing paddle tennis, reading, chasing the beach - or passionately arguing why early 2000s music will never be topped.

Heading into the 2026 season, Nelson shapes as a livewire No.9 - quick-thinking, competitive and ready to dictate the pace when the pressure climbs.
