The Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies celebrated the inductions of Brumbies Legends David Giffin and Owen Finegan at the club's 2024 State of the Union event presented by Gow-Gates Insurance Brokers on Friday afternoon at Hotel Realm, Canberra.
The duo joined the likes of Stirling Mortlock, George Smith, George Gregan, Stephen Larkham and Joe Roff to receive the top honour. The Brumbies Legends initiative has been established to recognise exceptional men and women's players of International significance.
Finegan, who made 90 appearances for the Brumbies and featured in both Super Rugby Final victories was surprised to be awarded the accolade.
The bustling forward said, "There has been so many amazing people who have been a part of this journey."
"In 1996, we were lucky enough to start a new team with the Brumbies. Before that, the Kookaburras and the ACT teams who had gone before us had paved the way."
"It's just amazing to see the Brumbies are still at the top of their game today."
Giffin, who was awarded the keys to the city after scoring the winning try in the 2001 Super Rugby 12 Final against the Sharks was overcome with emotion.
The former Brumbies' lock forward said, "I'm extremely grateful. My relationship with the club has been one of the highlights of my life."
"I've seen incredible ups and downs with the club. I'm just incredibly grateful to be a part of the family," said the former Wallabies Vice-Captain.
The rugby luncheon, an annual showpiece in the ACT region serves as a major fundraiser for local community driven rugby programs, as well as the pathway and academies for men and women.
The event attracted numerous past players who took part in the 2004 Super Rugby Grand Final, with the likes of Aaron Mauger, Bill Young, David Fitter, David Giffin, David Palavi, Jeremy Paul, Joe Roff, Joel Wilson, Mark Bartholomeusz, Mark Chisholm, Mark Gerrard, Scott Fava, Stephen Larkham, Tamaiti Horua and Corey Flynn.
The 3 course sit-down luncheon, featured a guest panel hosted by Bill Woods, with Brumbies Head Coach Stephen Larkham, Captain Allan Alaalatoa and Crusaders Head Coach Rob Penney and Captain Codie Taylor fielding questions from the audience.
Brumbies CEO Phil Thomson said, "The 2024 State of the Union event was a great celebration of Brumbies rugby history. It was pleasing to see a reunion of former Brumbies and Crusaders players at the function."
"I'm sure everyone is looking forward to tomorrow's Super Rugby Pacific clash between both sides at GIO Stadium," added Thomson.
The Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies take on the Crusaders in Round 13 of the Super Rugby Pacific at GIO Stadium this Saturday, May 18. The match kicks off at 2:35PM AEST with tickets available via Ticketek.
