The Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies have fallen to the Hamilton-based Chiefs, 46-12 on Sunday afternoon at AAMI Park, Melbourne in Round 2 of the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific Season.
Kiwi Damien McKenzie opened up the scoring for the match when he put the Chiefs 3-nil up after a successful penalty inside 4 minutes.
The Chief's would increase the lead in a matter of minutes when winger Etene Nanai-Seturo broke through the Brumbies defence to put scrumhalf Xavier Roe over the line. McKenzie slotting the conversion to have the Hamilton-based side up 10-nil after 10 minutes.
Brumbie's winger Corey Toole would respond with a trademark try, chipping it over the Chiefs defence and regathering to grab the Brumbies first of the afternoon.
The early flurry of tries would continue when fullback Shaun Stevenson linked up with Nanai-Seturo to dive over in the 15th minute. Damien McKenzie increasing the lead minutes later with a converted try of his own. The Chiefs heading into the break with a 25-7 lead at halftime.
Both teams resumed in the second half with a share of possession and field territory for the opening stanza.
ACT capitalised on a 50-22 kick from skipper Ryan Lonergan, which turned into points moments later when Toole went over down the left edge for his second of the afternoon. The Brumbies cutting down the lead 25-12 with just over 20 minutes to go.
Though it would be the Chiefs who would hit back immediately, substitute Josh Ioane finishing off a long pass of play to dive over.
The Chiefs would close out the match with two quick tries to Cortez Ratima, the ACT Brumbies going down to the Chiefs 46-12 on Sunday afternoon at AAMI Park.
