The University of Canberra has named its squad for the opening tournament of the 2018 University Sevens Series in Hobart this weekend.

Brumbies Womens fullback Sammie Wood, who plays locally for the Gungahlin Eagles will wear the captain’s armband in round one.

Wood was included in the Wallaroos extended squad for 2018, after impressing in Super W and the 7s.

Fellow Brumby Jane Garraway is poised to make her University debut, while there also places for Tania Afamasaga, Michaela Leonard, Paremo Marsh and Darcy Read who were all part of the Brumbies Womens inaugural Super Squad.

Elsewhere, American enforcer Abby Gustaitis has returned for a second season and will feature this weekend.

She helped the USA 7s team to a fourth-place finish at the Rugby World Cup Sevens last month.

Yasmin Meakes is back in blue and white for UC as well.

Meakes earned a national jersey after impressing for the University during the inaugural series in 2017 and is now on a full-time contract.

The University of Canberra has been placed in Pool B and will face the University of New England, Griffith University, Bond University and the University of Sydney.

The tournament will be streamed live on rugby.com.au.
