Tayla Stanford first picked a rugby ball up in Cooma at eight-years-old playing League until she swapped codes to union the age of ten. At twelve, she was unable to play with the boys anymore so Tayla had to leave footy and played Soccer until she was fourteen.
Picking the oval ball back up two years later, Stanford’s quick feet and barnstorming runs helped with the accolades she has achieved from then on. She represented the Brumbies Schoolgirls in 15’s and 7’s and at 16-years-old was selected for the Brumbies Women’s 7’s team that won the National Championship.
This was indeed, a dream come true. Little did Stanford know that barely two years later she would be selected to represent Australia at the Youth Olympics in China, the icing on the cake was to come back to Australia with a gold medal around her neck. It was certainly a once in a life time experience she will never forget. Subsequently, Stanford decided to move to Canberra to join the local Women’s competition with the Tuggeranong Viqueens. This has helped her grow as a player with the honour of pulling on the Brumbies’ Women jersey in 15’s and 7’s every year since 2012 until 2017 when she was ruled out due to injury.
But that didn’t stop the energetic Stanford from pushing further and harder with her selection in the inaugural Super W Series in 2018 with the Brumbies and UC AON 7’s team which saw her selected into the Wallaroos extended squad.
