From the moment James Slipper set foot in Brumbies HQ, everyone at the club knew that he would be a success with Australia’s most successful side.
The 30-year-old’s much publicised suspension seems so long ago now, after he, alongside Scott Sio, formed the most deadly scrummaging attack, perhaps in World Rugby.
On the field, Slipper was immense but it’s his leadership off it which has been even more impressive.
A captain at the Reds and a 96-cap Wallaby, scoring his first ever international try in the Rugby World Cup win over Uruguay, Slipper instantly became a popular figure in the Brumbies, his presence undeniable, and that transferred on to the field.
Incredibly, Slipper played every game last season, scoring one try, a memorable effort against the Blues at GIO Stadium. With a young squad in 2020, Slipper’s leadership will be called upon once again, as will his power on the field.
