There is a sense of timing with the 2025 Brumbies, there is a quiet optimism that things are clicking at the right time.
That was on display against the Reds, before last week’s shutout against Moana Pasifika. To hold a team to nil – while away from home - is always impressive, but the patience shown by the Canberrans was perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the performance. In doing so, the Brumbies became the first Super Rugby team to keep a clean sheet this season.
That brings us to Round 11, Anzac Weekend Round. Always a truly special occasion, our ACT Brumbies play host to the Hurricanes for the Captain Shout Cup at GIO Stadium. During a week of remembrance and gratitude, it is fitting that the two sides representing Australia and New Zealand’s capitals play for something more than just competition points.
The Hurricanes enter the match on the second leg of their Australian tour. Their first match in Perth ended in neither victory nor defeat, with only the width of the post preventing the visitors from breaking the deadlock.
The Brumbies currently sit 3rd on the Super Rugby Pacific table with four of their remaining five matches at home. Conversely, the Hurricanes sit one spot outside the top six in seventh, having won only three of their nine matches to date.
Last year’s installation of the fixture proved an instant classic. A high-flying Hurricanes team arrived in Canberra on top of the ladder, only to be outgunned by a near-flawless Brumbies performance.
Coach Stephen Larkham will be looking for a repeat of that performance, particularly with Hurricanes strike-man Jordie Barrett absent for the 2025 season.
As far as matchups are concerned, it’s hard to go past the battle of the 9’s. Cam Roigard is a proven test player, who is arguably the form player of the competition. He will be met on Saturday by the perennially underrated Ryan Lonergan, who is looking to push for a Wallabies berth of his own.
The match is sure to live up to the occasion, shining a light on the unbreakable bond the two nations share – through the joy of rugby.
