Despite having a Round 2 bye, the action doesn’t stop for our Brumbies women as they face Penina Pasifika in a development match this Saturday.
Penina Pasifika - established through a partnership of Rugby Australia, Oceania Rugby, World Rugby, and the Australian Government - provides a pathway for Pacific players to compete in high-level Rugby competitions.
The team was founded off the back of the success of the Fijian Drua Super Rugby Women’s side, whose championship titles showcased the talent available in the region. The side is comprised of largely amateur players from Tonga and Samoa and will provide opposition for each of the Super Rugby Women’s sides during bye weeks.
Their competitive performances in 2024 more than justified the initiative, in a season where they pushed numerous Super Rugby Women’s sides in tight contests.
Our Brumbies Women, on the other hand, will be looking to fine-tune their game after their thrilling 29-29 draw with the Force in Perth. Although getting themselves in a position to win the match, Andy Friend would be pleased with a performance that showed little signs of rust.
Merania Paraone proved pivotal on her Brumbies debut, contributing defensively as well as crossing the stripe for the first try of the afternoon. Despite a missed penalty at the death, Faitala Moleka was otherwise clinical off the tee, nailing 4/5 kicks during the match.
The match-up against Pasifika will give some younger squad members a chance to shine, whilst allowing established members of the side to continue developing their combinations into the season.
Entry to the match is free, which fittingly, will be played at the University of Canberra, home of Brumbies HQ. With a rare opportunity to watch our women play free of charge, Brumbies fans won’t want to miss what shapes as a high-scoring affair.
Parking on campus is free on Saturday, and you are recommended to park in the casual car parks near building 22/23 and building 29 (P4 and P22).
For your food and beverage needs, Oscar's Bakery Cafe and Coffee Grounds will be open on campus, or patrons may bring their own food and drink.
Recommended time of arrival is 12:30pm, to secure a seat and watch both teams warm up prior to kick-off.
With kick-off at the new time of 1pm and beautiful weather expected, the afternoon promises to be a wonderful day out for members and fans alike. Don’t miss your chance to witness the skill and power of our Brumbies Women as they take on Penina Pasifika this Saturday!
