The ACT & SNSW Rugby Union have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Capital 7s and Super 7s tournaments due to the current and continuing restrictions on community sport both in the ACT and NSW.

The annual tournament sees premier clubs from around the region compete in an exciting multi-round competition, with the support of the Wagga Wagga City Council.

COVID-19 restrictions on travel and the extra resourcing and infrastructure required to host the respective events safely and in a COVID compliant made hosting the tournament this year untenable.

With the differing restrictions across the two jurisdictions and the required resourcing, logistical planning and infrastructure required to meet the current requirements in both meant that our position and wish to run the tournament in 2021 unattainable.

Brumbies deputy CEO and General Manager Community Rugby, Craig Leseberg said: “This decision will be extremely disappointing for all following a successful tournament last year, but this will allow clubs to begin preparations for a full 2022 calendar with hopefully minimal restrictions.”

“Ultimately with present COVID restrictions and the potential infrastructure required to host multiple events across the ACT and NSW, the decision, while difficult, was one we had to make.

“We want to thank the Wagga Wagga City Council for their ongoing support in helping to elevate the game with these annual youth and senior sevens tournaments.”

The ACT & SNSW Rugby Union urges everyone in community sport to get vaccinated against COVID-19, to ensure safe return to rugby in 2022."
