The ACT Brumbies and the University of Canberra have teamed up to unveil the Women's Emerging Leaders Scholarship, a targeted initiative to aid in the development of women’s rugby in Australia.

Granting financial support for women who participate in the Brumbies Women's Academy or Super W squads, the scholarship will give up and coming women an opportunity to pursue their rugby careers for the duration of their study at the University of Canberra.

“We’re proud to be partnering with the University of Canberra for a program which will be game-changing for the development of women’s rugby,” ACT Brumbies Deputy CEO & General Manager of Community Rugby, Craig Leseberg, said.

“To be able to provide a pathway for the best talent in Australia to come to a fantastic university, get a great education and be supported throughout their studies while pursuing their rugby dreams in our program is a fantastic step in the right direction on the journey we are all on to grow the women’s game.”

“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank the Lestari Foundation for their ongoing generosity and support of rugby in the ACT.”

The Women’s Emerging Leaders Scholarship will be awarded in January 2023 for the first time, and distributed to recipients in two $5,000 instalments, for a maximum of six semesters.

Carrie Graf, Director of UC Sport, said the University of Canberra was proud to be partnering with the ACT Brumbies, and sharing their commitment to female athletes.

“The Women’s Emerging Leaders Scholarship funded by The Lestari Foundation will contribute to empowering women in sport whilst ensuring they don’t need to forgo their sporting career in favour of succeeding in their education.”

“Trying to be a successful athlete while balancing university comes with its challenges. Receiving a scholarship for the duration of their degree will have an incredible impact in helping them balance their studies and the demands of everyday life whilst giving their best to the sport they love.”

The ACT Brumbies and the University of Canberra are excited to see the impact that this scholarship will have on women in rugby and look forward to identifying the inaugural recipients of the Women’s Emerging Leaders Scholarship.
